First Motif

Rnd1: Begin with a magic circle, ch3 (ch-3 counts as a dc here and throughout), 2dc in circle, ch1, *(3dc, ch1) in circle, rep from * 4 more times, pull yarn tail end to close magic circle, sl st in top of beg ch-3.   (6 sets of 3dc sts and 6 ch-1 spaces)

Rnd2: ch3, 1dc in each of the next 2dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, *1dc in same ch-1 sp, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, rep from * 4 more times, 1dc in same ch-1 sp, sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (6 sets of 5 dc sts and 6 ch-3 spaces) Place a marker anywhere on this motif to reference that it is the First Motif.

To complete the scarf you can either make 61 motifs using the instruction for the First Motif, then sew the adjacent motifs together at the ch-3 spaces or you can join the adjacent motifs as you complete Rnd 2. The instructions are specific but once you get the hang of joining the motifs you won’t need the detailed instructions.

 

Note: The ch-3 spaces of Rnd2 are identified later in this pattern as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th ch-3 space as determined by the order in which they are made from the beginning ch-3 of the round.

 

The following motifs are joining motifs.

Second Motif

Rnd1: Complete the same as the First Motif.

Rnd2: ch3, 1dc in each of the next 2dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, *ch3, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in the next ch-1 sp. Rep from * 3 more times, ch-1, sl st into the 2nd ch-3 sp on the First Motif (or previous motif), ch1, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, sl st in 1st ch-3 sp on First Motif (or previous motif), ch1, 1dc in same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Third Motif

Complete the same as the Second Motif.

Fourth Motif

Rnd1: Complete the same as the First Motif.

Rnd2: ch3, 1dc in each of the next 2dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, *ch3, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in the next ch-1 sp. Rep from * 3 more times, ch-1, sl st into the 6th ch-3 sp on the First Motif (or right side motif), ch1, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, sl st in 5th ch-3 sp on First Motif (or right side motif), ch1, 1dc in same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Fifth Motif

Rnd1: Complete the same as the First Motif.

Rnd2: ch3, 1dc in each of the next 2dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, 1dc in same ch-1 sp, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp. Ch1, sl st in 1st ch-3 sp of the Third Motif, ch1, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, *1dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch1, sl st into the sl st btwn the two motifs, ch1, 1dc in same ch-1 sp, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts. Rep from * 2 more times, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, sl st in 4th ch-3 sp of the Fourth Motif, ch1, 1dc in same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Sixth Motif

Rnd1: Complete the same as the First Motif.

Rnd2: ch3, 1dc in each of the next 2dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, *ch3, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in the next ch-1 sp. Rep from * 2 more times, ch-1, sl st into the 2nd ch-3 sp on the Third Motif (or left side motif), ch1, 1dc in the same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, sl st into the sl st btwn motifs, ch1, 1dc in same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, 1dc in each of the next 3dc sts, 1dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, sl st into the 1st ch-3 sp of the Fifth Motif, ch1, 1dc in same ch-1 sp on the motif you’re working, sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Overview of the Joining Sequence

  • Place marker on First Motif for reference.
  • Join Second to First
  • Join Third to Second
  • Join Fourth to First
  • Join Fifth to Third, Second, First, and Fourth
  • Join Sixth to Third and Fifth
  • Join Seventh to Fourth
  • Join Eighth to Sixth, Fifth, Fourth, and Seventh
  • Join Ninth to Sixth, and Eighth
  • Continue joining in this manner.
