Chain 15. Stitches are worked in back loops only thru row 29.

Row1: dc in 4th chain from hook and in each st to end. = 13 sts. (ch3 counts as a dc throughout)

Row2: ch3, 1dc in each st to end. = 14 sts. (ch3 counts as dc throughout)

Row3: ch3, 1dc in each st to end. = 15 sts.

Row4: ch3, 1dc in each st to end. = 16 sts.

Row5: ch3, 1dc in each st to end. = 17 sts.

Row6: ch3, 1dc in each st to end. ch50.

Row7: working in back loops, 4sc in first ch, 3sc in each of the next 38 chain sts, 1dc in each of the next 10 ch sts, ch1, sk1 st, 1dc in each of the next 18 dc sts.

Rows8-23: repeat row 6 and row 7 eight more times for a total of 9 curly ‘tails’.

Row24: ch3, dc2tog, 13dc, dc2tog. = 18 sts

Row25: ch3, dc2tog, 12dc, dc2tog. = 17 sts.

Row26: ch3, dc2tog, 11dc, dc2tog. = 16 sts.

Row27: ch3, dc2tog, 10dc, dc2tog. = 15 sts.

Row28: ch3, dc2tog, 9dc, dc2tog. = 14 sts.

Row29: ch3, 1dc in each st to end. =13 sts.

Row30: ch1, turn, 1sc in each of the next 6dc sts. Ch50, sl st thru the ‘bump’ in the back of 2nd chain from hook and thru the ‘bump’ of each chain st. 1sc in each of the next 6 dc sts. Turn corner, 1sc in same st, complete 12 sc sts evenly spaced along back edge of bonnet, sl st into 1st chain of 1st tail. Ch3, skip 4 ‘tails’, sc in the post of the last dc of bonnet at the middle ‘tail’, ch3, skip 4 ‘tails’, sl st in 1st chain in row 6. Ch6, flip piece over, sl st in same post (middle ‘tail’ row), ch6, sl st in last sc. Flip piece over, sl st in each st of ch-3, sl st in next sc, sl st in each st of next ch-3. Complete 12 sc sts evenly spaced along back edge of bonnet. Turn corner, 1sc in same st, 1sc in next 6 dc sts. Ch50, sl st thru the ‘bump’ in the back of 2nd chain from hook and in each ch st. 1sc in each of the next 6 dc sts. 1sc in same st, complete about 60 sc sts evenly spaced along the front edge of the bonnet. Fasten off.

Special Instructions: Fan Pattern = (dc, * ch1, dc in same st, rep from * twice)

Trim

Row 1: With WS facing, join trim yarn in 2nd sc st at back edge of bonnet on left side of ‘tails’, sk1 st, dc in next st, * ch1, dc in same st, rep from * twice. **sk1 st, sl st in next sc, sk1 st, complete Fan Pattern in next st. Repeat from ** around. Make fan behind each tie.

Row 2: Ch1, turn (* sc in next ch-1 sp, ch3, sc in same ch-1 sp,) 3 times, sl st in next sl st, rep from * around. Fasten off.

Make 4 pom-poms. Attach 2 pom-poms at top of ‘tails’. Attach 1 pom-pom to the end of each tie.

To make a striped bonnet, alternate the colors as indicated:

Color A: Beginning chain and rows, 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21, 24, 25, 28, and 29.

Color B: Rows 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 30 and trim rows 1, and 2.
